Sometimes it nice just to see what the world’s financially elite are up to. Apparently being an architect pays well… Behold the beautiful 44.7m (147ft) lift keel sloop “Lady B”. Built and launched by Vitters Shipyard who design some pretty incredible boats. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86aVYZMZuxA&w=560&h=315] “Lady B” is a sleek performance yacht with the ever-sought-after low-slung lines of…
This is one of the most magnificent sailboats built today. Watch this well edited video that summarizes the entire build process of the Fairlie 55. What a beautiful boat and what beautiful craftsmanship. You don’t see too many boats built like this today. I personally, love the line between classic design/craftsmanship, meets modern innovation. If you are into how things are made then…
People have been talking more and more about wing sails these days. This technology can’t possibly make its transition into the cruising sailboat market, or can it? Yachting Monthly checks out the new Elan 37 equipped with the Omer Wing Sail. A wing shaped soft sail that can be doused, stowed, and even reefed. On this day we where conducting a rigging inspection and rig tune. Although it looked beautiful, it was disgustingly HOT! You can see clearly below that in order to remove the mast head sheaves the entire mast head needs to be un-bolted and removed. The sheave pins are hidden inside the mast wall. Slick, but…
We went aloft for a safety inspection after this beautiful Cabo Rico experienced a lightening strike. You can see below that the brunt of the lightening strike was taken by the VHF antenna. Pictured below you will see two head-swivels on a set of Profurl headsail furlers. One with correct hoist and one…
Today was a HOT one! We went aloft to see if this boat can accept an all rope jib halyard. As you can see, it is not the sheave that is the problem but rather space between the head-stay and sheave, it is simply too tight to fit anything other than wire. Other than the…
This week we were aloft to replace a headsail furler. Hood Yacht Systems provided this furler. The Hood Seafurl seems to be a good furler. I’d say my only real tiff with these systems is the rubber liner that is found inside each of the extrusions. The ball bearings are dry lubricated, which I like….
Cool camera angles, cool music, a very cool boat, and one cool crane op. Go, Oracle Team USA! [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9U6r-B27qw&w=560&h=315]
Click on the images for a larger view. It was a dreary day in the Baltimore Inner Harbor. Here we were aloft at the desirable Baltimore Marine Center Lighthouse Point. Our FREE rigging safety inspections are becoming quite popular. This was a Beneteau 473, a tall mast that offers a nice view. Thanks for checking out…
A beautiful tucked away spot in one of Annapolis’ many waterfront hiding spots. Any guesses where this might be? (click the image for a larger view) We conducted a rigging survey on a Catalina 36. Look there is my puppy dog Sidney, wondering ‘what in god’s green earth’ am I doing up there. ……and hey there’s Sean, Hi Sean ;-0)…
Since I have been slacking a little this week (it has been really busy around here), here is a little entertainment that I found on good old YouTube. Take a few minutes and enjoy these sailboat bloopers. It will surely brighten your Saturday. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyBUc8bqzp8&w=420&h=315] ……make sure you are always safe out there. ~T.R.C.
