With the new boats launching and the teams preparing for this year’s Volvo Ocean Race, let us take a look back, way back to the race’s debut, 1973.

It seems that this race was a bit more laid back then, card games, leather sofas, laundry parties on the aft deck, I guess it is all about keeping the moral high.

I can’t wait for this winter to be over, but at the same time I am looking forward to October 2014…

And just for fun…….check out the race’s first all female crew in 1989 aboard the 58′ sloop ‘Maiden’.

  1. Sexist remarks about Maiden crew’s ability. Entitled white men still think they deserve or actually earned all their yachting privileges. Remind me to give The Rigging Company a miss next trip past Annapolis.

    1. Making sexist remarks about the all-women’s team inability was certainly not my intention. Instead it was to highlight and root for an all new female team, Team SCA, of the 2014-15 Volvo Ocean Race.

The comment (which I have deleted) They didn’t do so hot, but definitely looked the part, was noting that they (Team Maiden) finished 18th out of 21 boats overall (not so hot), and I found the team of women quite pleasant looking. I shouldn’t have commented on their looks.

Also, it has since been brought to my attention that they actually finished 2nd of 4 in their class! So that is worth mentioning.

My apologies for coming across demeaning, it was never my intention…and thank you for pointing it out😊
