Any line that ends in a loop and will be load-bearing in any capacity should be spliced. Tying a knot such as a bowline in the end of a line, while convenient, significantly reduces the strength of the line – by as much as 70% in some cases. A properly-spliced structural eye will be as strong as the line itself.
To become a line, a piece of rope must be “finished” – with either an eye splice of some sort (structural or non-structural), or a “burn & whip.” This is to prevent the bitter end from fraying and unraveling.
Reeving eyes or Flemish eyes are non-structural eyes that we place in the handling end of all halyards and lines reeved through spars. These eyes serve as an easy attachment point for a chase line, making removal of the line for cleaning, winterizing or replacement an easy task that any owner is capable of doing without the help of a rigger.
