Mast tuning

Whether we are talking about a cruising or a racing sailboat, having the mast tuned properly is an important final touch to ensuring that the boat sails properly and the mast is properly supported.

Tuning a mast properly can be broken down into two components: a static dock tune, the most common tuning method which provides spar support and covers most sailing conditions; or a sailing tune, which starts with a good static tune, but is then finalized on the water and will set the boat up for that specific condition.

A static dockside and sailing tune will include:

  • Mast rake
  • Spar alignment and centeredness athwartships
  • Pre-bend
  • Shroud tension

With a wealth of racing experience the TRC team can advise and implement a tailored tuning guide for your racing yacht. If looking for a good middle of the road mast tune that will give you the confidence to cruise to any of the world’s water destinations, we’ve got you covered. Not only can we improve the performance of your yacht and/ or give you piece of mind that things are set up right, a proper tune can also improve ease of furling systems and prolong the lifespan of your mast and standing rigging.
