Forespar whisker poles are heavy-duty and built to last. Telescoping line-control poles can be extended into position with an internal purchase system, and retracted for easier storage. The system is simple, and makes the extension and retraction of poles quick and easy. And – the entire operation can be executed while being positioned at the mast.

Whisker poles are used for non-spinnaker class racing and short-handed cruising, or whenever downwind performance is desired without the use of conventional spinnakers. A properly sized and deployed whisker pole will allow the headsail to add considerable power and speed to downwind sailing. Telescoping whisker poles allow one pole to be used with furling headsails or multiple sized jibs and genoas on a given boat.

By projecting the headsail out to weather and out of the mainsail’s “wind shadow”, the headsail can fill and stabilize. Without a whisker pole, the headsail will flop from side to side, limp and useless. The use of a whisker pole will allow “wing on wing” sailing dead downwind with surprising performance. In recent years, asymmetrical spinnakers have become “all the rage” in off-the-wind sailing. These sails are subject to the same dynamics as jibs or genoas as you turn closer to dead down wind or try to sail “deep”. The use of a whisker pole to hold out the clew of the asymmetrical sail will stabilize the sail in the same way as it does a genoa and allow better performance and an increased “sailing angle” with these sails.

These 50/50 poles have a carbon inner tube and an aluminum outer tube. They are lighter than an all aluminum pole, while also being more cost effective than an all-carbon pole.

Poles are available with several end fittings:
-UTS “Socket,” a female end that accepts a male plunger-style receiver. This is our recommended inboard end fitting. The plunger attaches to a traveler car that runs on a track on the front of the mast; the plunger positively locks into the end fitting, keeping the pole securely on the mast while also allowing it to freely rotate, alleviating the problem of jaw-style ends breaking either themselves or the mast-mounted ring they are attached to when the pole rotates.
-EL or UXP “Piston,” a traditional jaw-style fitting with a spring-loaded mouth that must be held open to capture a line.
-UTR “Trigger,” a jaw-style fitting with a trigger on the top part of the jaw. Pull the spring-loaded mouth open and it will stay that way until the sheet is captured and the trigger is tripped, automatically capturing the sheet and releasing the jaw. This is our recommended outboard end fitting.

We recommend using this pole with an on-the-mast pole storage and control system – see our DIY section for available options. Contact us for any sizing questions. For sizing, see the table below, or use the Forespar Whisker Pole Selection Guide here or search by boat here.
